The fob detects when the driver approaches the door handles and unlocks automatically. Push-button start requires the fob inside the cabin where an antenna ring reads the transponder chip. Programming requires Volvo-specific OBDII software that communicates with the Central Electronic Module, called CEM, using a proprietary Volvo diagnostic protocol.
Volvo Digital Key, available on select XC40 and XC60 models, allows the owner to use a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone as a key through the Volvo Cars app. The Digital Key can also be shared temporarily with other drivers through the app. Physical key replacement is handled separately from Digital Key. Replacing the physical key does not affect any active Digital Key configurations in the Volvo Cars account.
All-keys-lost service on Volvo requires access to the Central Electronic Module via OBDII plus a PIN code from the Volvo database based on the vehicle VIN.
