BMW Key Technology Explained
BMW uses the Car Access System, known as CAS, to manage key authorization on models from 2001 through about 2017. The CAS module has gone through four generations. CAS1 and CAS2 appear on earlier E-series BMWs and use older HITAG2 transponder chips. CAS3 and CAS3+ cover the F-series generation with more advanced encryption. CAS4 and CAS4+ are found on late F-series models and use AES-128 encryption, the same standard used in banking security.
From the 2018 G-series onward, BMW switched to the Front Electronic Module, called FEM, and the Body Domain Controller, called BDC. These platforms require different diagnostic procedures than the older CAS modules. The Display Key option on G-series models adds an LCD touchscreen to the fob so the driver can check fuel level, lock status, and remote climate settings without opening an app. Display Key programming involves an extra screen pairing step on top of the standard transponder enrollment.
All-keys-lost service on CAS4+ and FEM vehicles requires either a pin code from the dealer authorization system or EEPROM reading from the module directly. We use professional tools that handle both methods. The process takes 60 to 90 minutes at your location and requires proof of ownership. We do not start work without verified ownership documentation.

BMW Key Services We Offer
BMW CAS and FEM Key Programming
We program BMW smart key fobs using CAS-generation or FEM-specific tools depending on your model year. The new key handles proximity entry, push-button start, and full immobilizer authentication. We test all functions at your location.
BMW Display Key Replacement
The G-series Display Key adds a touchscreen to the standard fob. We program replacement Display Keys including the screen pairing step that standard fob tools skip. We verify the screen shows live vehicle data before we leave.
BMW Transponder Blade Key
Older BMW models from the 1990s and early 2000s used a blade key with a HITAG transponder chip. We cut the blade to factory spec and program the chip on-site for all E-series models.
All Keys Lost — BMW
All-keys-lost service on CAS4+ and FEM models uses pin-code authorization or direct EEPROM reading. We extract the security data and enroll a new key at your location. Ownership verification is required.
BMW Spare Key Duplication
A spare BMW key programmed today costs significantly less than an all-keys-lost emergency. We add a second key in the same visit. BMW households with two drivers benefit from each person carrying a separately enrolled fob.
Common BMW Key Problems
CAS module communication error on startup
The CAS module can develop communication faults that prevent key authentication. The car shows a key warning or refuses to start. We diagnose whether the module itself has failed or whether the key is the cause.
EWS anti-theft system error after battery replacement
Older BMW models with the Electronic Immobilizer System can trigger a start-prevention state after the main battery dies. We perform the EWS sync procedure to restore normal operation.
Display Key LCD screen stops updating
The Display Key screen can lose its pairing with the vehicle's data bus without losing push-button start function. We re-pair the screen to the vehicle network separately from the key enrollment.
Key fob works intermittently in cold weather
BMW proximity fob batteries lose output in extreme cold, causing intermittent entry failures. We test the battery and antenna circuit to determine whether the battery or the antenna is the root cause.
Key cloning attempted but car will not start
AES-128 encrypted CAS4+ and FEM transponders cannot be cloned with consumer tools. A cloned key fails authentication and may trigger an immobilizer lockout. We clear the lockout and enroll a properly programmed key.
