What Is Inside a Car Ignition System?

Most drivers think of "the ignition" as one single part. It is actually two separate components working together. The ignition cylinder is the mechanical lock that accepts your key. The ignition switch is the electrical module behind it that routes power to the starter motor, accessories, and engine management systems when the key reaches the START position.

Inside the cylinder sits a stack of spring-loaded wafers or tumblers. These are small metal pins that line up with the cuts on your key blade. When the correct key goes in, every tumbler aligns and the cylinder core rotates. Over time, especially on high-mileage vehicles, these tumblers wear down. A worn tumbler stack may refuse to turn, may turn only partway, or may bind unpredictably. A wrong key forced into the ignition speeds up that wear.

Many modern vehicles also have a transponder antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. This ring reads the chip in your key as part of the immobilizer system. If the ring fails, the cylinder turns but the engine does not start. Diagnosing this requires reading the immobilizer control module, not just inspecting the cylinder mechanically.

We bring both locksmith tools and a diagnostic computer to every ignition job. This lets us find the exact cause and fix it correctly the first time.

Ignition Problems We Diagnose & Fix

Key will not turn at all

Most often caused by worn wafers, a bent key blade, or the steering wheel anti-theft lock engaging. We rule out each cause in order before recommending a repair.

Key turns but engine will not start

The ignition switch behind the cylinder has likely failed, or the transponder antenna ring is broken. We test both before deciding on a repair.

Key stuck in the ignition

A detent spring failure, a worn shift-lock mechanism on automatics, or a damaged key blade can all trap the key. We remove the key and fix the root cause in the same visit.

Intermittent starting

The car starts sometimes and not others. This is a classic sign of worn ignition switch contacts making inconsistent contact in the START position.

Steering wheel locked solid

Some ignition cylinders link to the steering column lock. If the column has seized, the key may not turn until you move the wheel in the right direction at the same time. We test and repair both sides.

Ignition feels loose or wobbly

Wear in the cylinder housing retaining clip or damage to the housing itself. Left unfixed, this leads to complete cylinder failure.

Ignition Repair vs. Full Replacement

Not every ignition problem calls for a full cylinder replacement. We diagnose on-site to find the most cost-effective fix.

When We Repair

  • One or two failed wafers — we repin the cylinder to your existing key profile
  • Stuck key from a worn detent spring — replace the spring and lubricate the cylinder
  • Broken transponder ring antenna — replace the antenna coil without touching the cylinder
  • Burned ignition switch contacts — replace the electrical module while keeping the mechanical cylinder

When We Replace

  • Cylinder core cracked or shattered — full unit replacement is the only option
  • Multiple failed wafers — repinning is not reliable at that point
  • All keys lost and an immobilizer reset is needed — new cylinder paired to new keys at the same time
  • Housing damaged from a break-in attempt — both cylinder and housing need replacement for proper security

Why Mobile Ignition Repair Makes Sense

A failed ignition is one of the few car problems you typically cannot drive to a shop. If the key will not turn or the engine will not start, the car is stuck. Your options are towing or mobile service. Towing on Staten Island costs $150 to $300 before any labor or parts. Many general repair shops send ignition cylinder work to a locksmith anyway, adding markup to the price you already paid for the tow.

We remove the tow entirely. Our service vans carry ignition cylinders, switch assemblies, key blanks, and programming equipment for the most common domestic and import vehicles. We come to your driveway in Great Kills, your parking garage in St. George, or wherever the car sits, and complete the full ignition service there.

Need new keys after your ignition repair? Our transponder programming service handles that in the same visit. Lost all your keys too? Our all-keys-lost service combines key creation and ignition repair into one stop.
