Why All-Keys-Lost Is a Bigger Problem
Replacing a key when you still have a spare is simple. Replacing keys when every single one is gone is a different problem. Most dealers and conventional locksmiths are not equipped to handle it on the spot. Here is why.
Modern vehicles use cryptographic immobilizer systems. The immobilizer keeps a list of enrolled key IDs. Adding a new key to that list normally requires presenting an already-enrolled key to authorize the addition. When no enrolled keys exist, that path is closed.
To work around this, a technician must access the immobilizer memory directly. This can be done through the OBDII port using manufacturer-specific software, or by reading the EEPROM chip on the body control module for older vehicles. Once we have the security seed data, we generate the correct key code, cut a new blade from your VIN, and enroll the new key as the system's first authorized key.
This job requires professional equipment, brand-specific software licenses, and the training to use them correctly. A hardware-store kiosk cannot do this. Our Staten Island mobile locksmith team does it every day.
How We Create Keys From Scratch
- 1
Ownership Verification
We confirm you are the registered owner using your license, registration, or title. This is required by our licensing and protects you.
- 2
VIN-Based Key Profile
Your Vehicle Identification Number contains your car's original factory key cut code. We query this against our automotive database to find the exact blade profile.
- 3
Physical Key Cutting
We cut a new blade on our precision code-cutter. For laser-cut or high-security keys, we use the correct specialized cutting machine.
- 4
Security Seed Extraction
We connect to the OBDII port and read the cryptographic data from the immobilizer control unit. This data lets us authorize a new key.
- 5
Chip Programming and Enrollment
We write the security data to a compatible transponder chip and enroll it in the immobilizer list. On supported vehicles, we also delete any lost keys at this stage.
- 6
Full Function Test
We verify the key starts the engine, the fob works, and the security system responds correctly before we leave your location.
Why You Do Not Need a Tow Truck
The standard advice when all keys are lost is "call a tow truck and go to the dealer." That advice is expensive and slow. Towing in New York City costs $150 to $300 for a local haul. Dealer labor for key programming runs $200 to $500 on top of parts. You will likely wait two or more business days for the dealer to source the right blank. The total often comes to $600 or more.
Our mobile service removes every one of those costs. The car does not move. We bring the cutting machine and the programming computer to the vehicle. We cut and program keys at your location. We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so there is no waiting until Monday morning.
We cover every corner of Staten Island. North Shore: St. George, Stapleton, Port Richmond. Mid-Island: Dongan Hills, New Dorp, New Springville. South Shore: Great Kills, Tottenville, Annadale, Eltingville. Our average response time across the borough is under 30 minutes.
Securing Your Vehicle After Key Loss
A new key is the minimum response to an all-keys-lost situation. Depending on how the keys were lost, you may want to take extra steps. We can advise on or perform these during the same visit:
- ✓Immobilizer key deletion: On supported vehicles, we erase all previously enrolled keys. The lost set cannot start the car even if someone finds it.
- ✓Lock cylinder re-keying: If keys were stolen, re-cutting the door and ignition cylinders to a new key profile stops the old keys from opening the car mechanically.
- ✓Spare key set: We strongly suggest making a second programmed key in the same visit. Having a spare costs far less than another emergency call.
