What Is a Car Key Fob?
A key fob is a small electronic device. It sends radio signals to your car to lock, unlock, and start it. Most fobs transmit on 315 MHz or 433 MHz, depending on the manufacturer. Modern fobs carry a transponder chip inside the key head. When you start the car, the ignition reads that chip. The chip sends an encrypted code back to the car. The car's immobilizer checks that code. If the codes match, the engine starts. If they do not match, the engine stays off. This is true even if the blade cuts perfectly to the right shape.
Battery life is typically one to three years. But fobs also fail from water damage, drops, or signal interference. Buying a replacement fob at a hardware store or online will not fix your problem. Every new fob must be electronically paired to your specific car before it will work.
Rolling-code encryption makes modern fobs very secure. The signal changes with every button press, so a thief cannot record and replay an old signal to open your car. This also means that only professional programming equipment can pair a new fob to your vehicle.
Types of Key Fobs We Replace
Basic Keyless Entry Remote
A standalone remote with lock, unlock, and trunk buttons. It has no key blade. Vehicles from the late 1990s through the early 2000s used these most. We still see them as secondary remotes on newer vehicles.
Integrated Transponder Fob
This type has a physical key blade built in alongside the electronics. It locks and unlocks your doors and carries the transponder chip for starting. Most vehicles on the road today use this design.
Smart Key or Proximity Fob
Vehicles built after 2010 often use this type. The fob stays in your pocket or bag. The car detects it nearby and unlocks automatically. Push-button start works the same way. Programming requires professional OBDII software.
Flip or Switchblade Key Fob
The metal blade folds into the fob body when not in use. Audi, Volkswagen, and many domestic models use this design. We match the blade profile and program the chip in one visit.
High-Security Laser-Cut Fob
Found on luxury European brands and newer American vehicles. The key profile requires a dedicated laser-cut machine. We carry that equipment in our service vehicles.
Signs Your Key Fob Needs Replacing
Works sometimes, not others
A fresh battery may fix this. If it does not, the internal circuit has likely failed and the fob needs replacement.
No response at all
Even with a brand-new battery, the fob does nothing. The RF transmitter or circuit board has failed.
Range dropped sharply
The fob only works when you hold it inches from the door. The antenna or transmitter has weakened.
Buttons feel mushy or stuck
Worn rubber pads stop making contact with the circuit board. The fob may work some of the time but will fail entirely soon.
Physical crack or break
A cracked housing can break the antenna trace inside. This cuts off the signal and renders the fob useless.
Push-button start fails
The door unlocks fine but the engine will not start. The transponder chip has de-synced and needs reprogramming or replacement.
