GMC Key Technology Explained
GMC uses the GM PEPS system across its full lineup. The system detects an enrolled key fob near the door handles and unlocks when you grip the handle. Push-button start activates when the fob is inside the cabin. The Body Control Module maintains the enrolled key list and requires OBDII access to add or remove keys. GMC's OnStar integration links the BCM to the vehicle's connected services account for remote access features.
GMC Sierra trucks from the mid-2000s through the early 2010s used a transponder blade key with a Texas Instruments DST40 or PCF7936 chip. These keys carry a fixed-code transponder that responds to a challenge from the BCM each time the key is inserted. Replacing these keys requires the correct chip type and a GM-compatible programmer. We carry Sierra-specific blanks for all generations.
The GMC Yukon and Yukon XL use a large-vehicle variant of the PEPS system with additional antenna modules in the rear cargo area to cover the full length of the vehicle. This ensures that a driver approaching the liftgate from behind will trigger the unlock without walking around to the door. All-keys-lost service on the Yukon requires the same BCM OBDII access as smaller GM vehicles.

GMC Key Services We Offer
GMC PEPS Key Fob Programming
We program PEPS proximity fobs for all GMC models via OBDII connection to the BCM. The new fob handles passive entry, push-button start, and remote start if equipped.
GMC Transponder Blade Key
Older Sierra and Canyon models use a blade key with a transponder chip. We cut the blade from your VIN and program the chip using GM-compatible tools at your location.
GMC Denali Premium Key Service
Denali trim GMC vehicles have the same PEPS hardware as base trim models but may have additional interior locking features. We verify all premium entry functions after programming.
All Keys Lost — GMC
We access the BCM via OBDII to enroll a new key set with no original present. Ownership documentation is required. Sierra and Yukon all-keys-lost jobs take 30 to 60 minutes.
GMC Spare Key Duplication
A spare GMC key programmed today prevents a stranded Sierra or Yukon later. We add the second key in the same visit at a reduced cost.
Common GMC Key Problems
Sierra ignition cylinder wear on diesel work trucks
Heavy-duty Sierra trucks used as work vehicles accumulate ignition cylinder wear faster than personal vehicles. We repair or replace the cylinder on-site and match it to the existing key.
Canyon compact truck key range loss
The door handle antennas on Canyon trucks are smaller than those on Sierra models. Reduced fob range can make the passive entry detection inconsistent on cold days.
Yukon liftgate proximity sensor gap
The rear cargo antenna on some Yukon configurations has a narrower detection zone than the door antennas. Approaching the liftgate from directly behind does not always trigger the unlock.
OnStar account shows unauthorized key change
Adding a new key to a GMC enrolled in OnStar generates an account notification. This is a security feature, not an error. We advise customers to confirm the change in their myGMC account.
PEPS entry fails after prolonged cold weather
Extreme cold can reduce the signal output of PEPS antenna modules in the door handles. Passive entry becomes inconsistent. A battery replacement and antenna test usually resolves the issue.
